When many patients undergo rhinoplasty (cosmetic nasal surgery), their hope is to achieve a more natural appearance of the face. Of course, an aesthetically balanced face is the goal of any facial plastic surgery procedure. However, in some cases, nasal surgery may improve the appearance of the nose, but the face may still appear unbalanced as the result of a disproportionate chin. To realign the nose and chin into proper balance, many patients commonly undergo mentoplasty (chin augmentation) along with nasal surgery.

Even though nasal surgery can change the size of the nose, a "weak" chin can make the nose appear larger; on the flip side, a large chin can make it look too small. To determine if a chin augmentation is a good choice for a patient who is undergoing nasal surgery, a facial plastic surgeon will carefully evaluate the patient's facial bone structure.

There are various techniques used to perform chin augmentation. They can be inserted from a small incision hidden within a crease under the chin or from within the mouth. The incisions heal quickly and are well camouflaged so that they are not visible even during the healing period.

There are several materials from which implants are commonly made. The most common is sialastic which is a hardened silicone implant. This material is time tested and as been used for over 50 years safely. Other material that are available for chin augmentation include ePTFE and MedPor. Although facial implants are permanent / long-lasting, they can be removed if necessary.

Another technique is a sliding genioplasty, which involves cutting the chin bone and sliding it forward, then fastening it with titanium screws and metal plates. This procedure is more invasive and takes longer to heal from. It is less commonly performed then the more simple implant.

The amount of time needed to perform a along with rhinoplasty (nasal surgery) varies based upon the patient's facial structure and necessary refinements. Typically, a chin augmentation takes less then one hour, while the average procedure time for nasal surgery is one and a half to three hours.

The type of anesthesia used during the procedure varies. Options are local anesthesia, sedative anesthesia and general anesthesia. Swelling and bruising are common for a short period after the procedure. Most patients feel remarkably well after the surgery and have very little pain. It's common that many patients go back to work in one to two weeks.

A chin augmentation and nasal surgery can work together beautifully to create a harmonious, balanced appearance. To ensure optimal results, it's highly important to work with a seasoned, knowledgeable, board certified facial plastic surgeon. Rhinoplasty Los Angeles
