current events
i dont think we want a billboard system and the purpose wasnt to be editing the wiki every time the date for nanog changed. two solutions i think or this page should "go". 1 is to point it at the main page since when nanog folks are ready, they broadcast it on it the main page, 2 is to remove and leave it as it was with the future events pointed at the future events page.

This mediawiki 'default' hook is sometimes news & events about a wiki itself, sometimes about the wiki's topic. I think setting something up for constant updating is silly - perhaps instead of getting rid of it, a two-section approach where top one indicates the pointer to the nanog.org page (where the merit folks update things) and second would be any news/updates relevant to the wiki itself? Otherwise sure lobby ras to kill it. --jzp 22:43, 5 September 2006 (GMT)
Constant updating
If setting something up for constant updating is agreed to be silly then the "Current Events" menu item must be deleted. Current events must always be updated because they exist in a universe in which time moves along linearly and automatically. Anything that is current today, becomes obsolete tomorrow.
Why all this handwringing and loud complaining about changes to the wiki? This is all very un-wiki-like.
I simply saw an error (menu pointed to non-existent page) and I corrected it. I created the page and put some stuff on it relevant to what the menu said.
In general, the purpose of this wiki is very unclear. Is it a place for dyed in the wool experts to play alpha-male games writing stuff that nobody will read? Or is it a place to collect together some information useful to the next generation of people working in network operations who, by definition, do not know all the basis yet?

No hand-wringing here. I think where the concern was expressed as 'constant updating' really was about data that would get stale and require intervention even if initial author didn't want to play in this anymore.
As for purpose, see the About NANOG link at the bottom of every page; this is the wikified mailing list FAQ. "Generational concern" in that context is irrelevant.

many hands make light work
Seems folks have a good ide for drumming up a lot of membership - signup for the torix tour is here. There's active work going on regarding nanog39 and sure seems like it should be here. Will add later today if no-one has a sane reason not to. jzp 18:32, 3 February 2007 (GMT)
Future meetings
Seems we should re-push the future meetings to its own article again, given that there is more data here directly from the community meeting than on nanog.org. Updated this AM to show where the data was sourced. jzp 12:47, 5 February 2007 (GMT)
Updating with new location/date combinations. jzp 17:10, 26 September 2007 (GMT)
